We are cosmopolitan — Bradford is the diverse face of modern Britain. By 2025 half our population will have South Asian, Eastern European, African, Caribbean or Arab heritage amongst many others. Diverse teams are more successful, and we are determined to harness the creative power of our diversity. 3. We have an acclaimed cultural scene — From The Alhambra to The Brick Box, from Mind the Gap to Kala Sangam, from Cliffe Castle to Impressions Gallery, from Saltaire industrial village to the world’s first City of Film, we have an extraordinary base to build from. 54% of our visitor economy is already triggered by culture. 4. We have a powerful culture of entrepreneurship — Self-employment here has grown by 23% in ten years and in 2017 Barclays bank named us the best place in the country to start up a business. Our creative sector is collegiate and has shown itself incredibly resilient in the face of COVID-19. 5. We have famous landscapes and many beautiful historic buildings – Our mills and hills make for extraordinary locations for cultural activity. Compared to other parts of the country, property prices are very affordable.  6. We are at the heart of the north — We are the core of the Northern Powerhouse. We were central to the relocation of Channel 4 to Leeds and our diverse young population is an asset for any business addressing younger, global audiences, particularly in film, TV and digital media. 7. We are bucking national trends — The City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council is investing in our arts, culture and heritage sector, convinced of the value it adds. This has already inspired major new national investments by National Lottery Heritage Fund in St George’s Hall and Bradford Live; and by Arts Council England in The Leap and Bradford Producing Hub.</image:caption>

The Brick Box, a pioneer in cultural regeneration, has been reusing vacant spaces for art and culture for over a decade. Its new ‘Mills Are Alive’ project promises to use the District’s abandoned mills to showcase exceptional artwork from home and abroad. In the heart of Bradford city centre, the magnificent art deco Odeon cinema is being restored and will open in 2022 as Bradford Live. This 4,000-capacity live music and entertainment venue will host over 200 events and attract 300,000 visitors each year, transforming the District’s music scene and providing a huge boost to Bradford’s night-time economy.   A group of three younger women welcome a woman outside the recently renovated South Square. South Square is an arts, community and heritage centre based in a series of Grade II-listed former workers' cottages in Thornton. It has galleries, community spaces, framers, artists’ studios, a local-history archive, a bar and a vegetarian cafe. The centre was transferred to the community in 2020 and will complete a £1m renovation in 2021.   A joyful mixed group of performers, of all ages encourage the audience to join in on a colourfully lit stage at Kala Sangam.. Kala Sangam arts centre’s £3.6m project will double its footprint, bringing the entirety of its historic building back into creative and public use. A new 200-seat theatre, three new dance studio spaces, and offices and broadcast studios for BCB Radio will mean the creation of jobs and significantly increased support, enabling hundreds of performance artists to maintain careers in the District.   Two young kids point and interact with a giant digital screen in front of them which shows a playfully distorted image of themselves. The c£6m Sound &amp; Vision project at the National Science and Media Museum will work with Bradford communities to create two permanent, object-rich galleries that will explore the impact of sound and image technologies on the way that we hear and see the world.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>It is of little solace that compared with the rest of the UK, we are doing relatively well at promoting diversity and inclusion. There is much still to do: Despite Bradford’s young population, only 2% of the local cultural workforce are aged 16–24, compared with 7% nationally. While the sector workforce is more diverse than the population of England and of the cultural and creative industries nationally, only 10% is of south Asian Heritage compared with 27% of the District population. 55% of the District population are classed in less economically advantaged groups, compared with just 25% of the cultural sector workforce. People with disabilities that ‘affect their day-to-day activities a lot’ are under-represented in the workforce (2% compared with 8% of the local population). For the boards that govern cultural activity in the District, 50–64 year-olds are significantly over-represented compared with the population of the District. 23% of board membership has diverse heritage compared with 33% of the population. Males make up 49% of the District population but 58% of board membership.</image:caption>

The District’s new Economic Recovery Plan puts culture and place as one of the key drivers of post-pandemic recovery. Culture has also been made a priority for the West Yorkshire Combined Authority recovery plan. Bradford has taken a lead in declaring a climate emergency and is embedding the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals into its forward planning. Bradford Council has committed support to develop a bid to be UK City of Culture 2025.</image:caption>

The Brontë Society is custodian of the Parsonage Museum, home of the Brontë family, and extends the legacy of the family through innovative arts projects. Common Wealth is a dynamic, socially engaged theatre company based in Bradford and Cardiff, producing exceptional and acclaimed new work across the UK. Dance United Yorkshire works in communities across the District, changing lives in some of the most deprived places in the country. Four young female actors on stage standing and sitting in front of a bar laughing and smiling during a  production of Black Teeth and a Brilliant Smile by Lisa Holdsworth. Freedom Studios develops innovative new work and talent in theatre making. A young woman, Nadiya Jamir Hussain MBE, sitting on stage talking at Ilkley Literature Festival talking about her work. Ilkley Literature Festival is the longest running event of its kind in the north and, like Bradford Literature Festival, is a remarkable platform for new thinking and bringing opinion formers to the District. A group of three school children looking at framed photos at the Impression Gallery in Bradford holding pens and worksheets. Impressions is a leading national photography gallery and home of the New Focus young photographer’s collective. A joyful mixed group of performers, of all ages encourage the audience to join in on a colourfully lit stage at Kala Sangam. Kala Sangam is an intercultural arts hub in the heart of Bradford with a programme teeming with diversity and energy. The Zara project from Mind The Gap – a giant baby sculpture that is taller than the crane in front of it. It is a dark night but the baby is lit with colourful lights. People use sticks on the arms to animate the giant bay sculpture. Mind the Gap is one of Europe’s leading learning disability theatre companies that creates work for UK and international audiences. The team who lead Theatre in the Mill, two young men and two young women sitting and kneeling on top of a picnic bench, with a colourful pink umbrella behind them. Theatre in the Mill is a legendary studio theatre space at the University of Bradford famous for the development of emerging artists and companies.</image:caption>
